“So, I have one chance to get this right?”

"We hope you will be able to do the job," the man with the gruff voice adds. "The payment will be very generous."

It had better be.

I stand up from my seat and all the men step forward, menacingly. “I need my external hard drive.”

“Your what?” The man with the gruff voice looks at me, confused.

“My external hard drive? I’ve got a bot on it that—”

He raises a hand and shakes his head. “Where is it?”

I point over to a box on the other side of my apartment to a bookshelf. The man with the gruff voice gestures for one of the other men, who is tall and thin. The tall, thin man walks over to the shelf and gets down the box I was pointing to. He places it at the table in front of me before walking away.

With that in mind, I slide back into the chair and get to work. I'm at my most relaxed when my fingers working with computers got me into trouble a lot in high school as I was always daydreaming about my computer.

I plug in my external hard drive to the laptop and my fingers fly across the unfamiliar keyboard. I had programmed a bot on this particular hard drive to be able to hack into a computer if I had forgotten the password. After a few minutes of silence other than the clicking of computer keys, I’m in and I give a little whoop of excitement.

The gruff man nods, a smile on his face as he walks closer to peer at the computer. "Did it work? Did you gain access?"

I grin, feeling rather pleased with myself. "Yeah, I did. What are the messages you—”

The man with the gruff voice quickly takes the computer away for me and I look up in shock.

"Don't go through the messages," he barks out. "Thank you." He beckons at the other guys by the door, and one digs into a bag in his hand and drags out a bundle of money.

My jaw sags in shock at the wad of cash, mostly made up of one-hundred-dollar bills.

"Here it is," the gruff man says, getting the money and handing it over to me. "You have been very helpful."

Numbly, I take the money, too shocked to speak. If I were made of sterner stuff, I would have pressed to know what kind of job they do. But my need for self-preservation triumphs over other things and I rush out, glad I never have to see those strange men again.

The next day, I make my way to a coffee shop, a place of solace in my stressed-out world. I hate job hunting. It's exhausting and unrewarding most of the time. Today is just as bad. After a few hours of applications, I glance down at my phone to see a text from my best friend, Anna.

"Any luck today?"

"No," I reply sullenly. "It's been four hours of job hunting and I'm no closer to finding one than I was this morning.
